The objective of this study was to develop an integrative approach in ecotoxicology (from biomarkers to population genetics) to assess the ecological status of fish populations. Flounders (Platichthys flesus) collected after the spawning season in the heavily polluted Seine estuary were compared with the moderately polluted Bay of Douarnenez. The muscle energetic reserves were highly depleted in Seine vs. Douarnenez fish. The Seine fish displaying a reduced capacity to manage the oxidative stress and a higher energetic metabolism. The benthic production of prey seems to be one of the main drivers among many environmental factors that influence the quality of fish nurseries and potentially limit their carrying capacity. However, the contribution of food availability in the growth and survival of juveniles is still controversial. The Available Benthic Energy Coefficient (ABEC) aims to assess the trophic profitability of benthic invertebrate prey; this concept reflects the combination of energy richness and availability of prey. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize the mechanism of toxicity of fipronil on hepatocytes isolated from the rat and the effect of its biotransformation on the toxicological potential. The toxicity of fipronil was assessed by monitoring the oxygen consumption and mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular ATP concentration, Ca2+ homeostasis and cell viability. Connectivity patterns of anchovy larvae in the Bay of Biscay from a coupled transport-bioenergetic model forced by size-structured zooplankton ArchiMer

Connectivity during early life stages of pelagic fish, defined here by survival probability between spawning and early juvenile habitats, depends on a combination of sufficient food availability and low predator encounter along drift trajectories. For anchovy in the Bay of Biscay, larval transport experiments throughout the spawning season suggest accumulation of early juveniles in the offshore area of the southern Bay, as well as retention over the mid-shelf at mid-latitude. The efficiency of fat and protein retention by Bos indicus and its cross-breds was estimated from data obtained in the literature to verify possible differences between these animals and Bos taurus. After estimating the efficiencies, a correction factor was used to discount the metabolizable energy fraction that was spent in the maintenance and support metabolism processes. The efficiencies were then estimated again, assuming that all the remaining energy would correspond to the metabolizable energy available for body mass retention. Energy density of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

The energy density (E-D) of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay was determined by direct calorimetry and its evolution with size, age and season was investigated. The water content and energy density varied seasonally following opposite trends. The E-D g(-1) of wet mass (M-W) was highest at the end of the feeding season (autumn: c. 8 kJ g(-1) M-W) and lowest in late winter (c. 6 kJ g(-1) M-W). In winter, the fish lost mass, which was partially replaced by water, and the energy density decreased. These variations in water content and organic matter content may have implications on the buoyancy of the fish. Data of 320 animals were obtained from eight comparative slaughter studies performed under tropical conditions and used to estimate the total efficiency of utilization of the metabolizable energy intake (MEI), which varied from 77 to 419 kcal kg-0.75d-1. The provided data also contained direct measures of the recovered energy (RE), which allowed calculating the heat production (HE) by difference. The RE was regressed on MEI and deviations from linearity were evaluated by using the F-test. BACKGROUND: Gossypol is a chemical present in the seeds of cotton plants (Gossypium sp.) that reduces fertility in farm animals. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and may help to protect cells and tissues against the deleterious effects of free radicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanisms of reproductive toxicity of gossypol in rats and the protective effects of vitamin E. Forty Wistar rats were used, divided into four experimental groups (n = 10): DMSO/ saline + corn oil; DMSO/saline + vitamin E; gossypol + corn oil; and gossypol + vitamin E. We investigated links between swimming behavior and muscle bioenergetics in two emblematic Mediterranean fish species that have very different ecologies and activity levels. European sardines Sardina pilchardus are pelagic, they swim aerobically, school constantly and have high muscle fat content. Gilthead seabream Sparus aurata are bentho-pelagic, they show discontinuous spontaneous swimming patterns and store less fat in their muscle. Seasonal development of bacterial communities in a coastal marine sediment as related to the input of organic material. ArchiMer

The seasonal development of benthic communities was followed in a coastal marine sediment of the Kiel Bight (Baltic Sea; FRG). Total benthic biomass, (ATP), bacterial biomass, overall benthic activity (heat production), and enzymatic decomposition rates of carbohydrate (d-amylase activity) followed a seasonal cycle strongly related to certain events in the sediment. Among these, the input of the phytoplankton blooms in autumn and spring, the accumulation of organic material during winter, and changes in the physical characteristics of the sediment turned out to be most important for the development of benthic biomass and activity. Processes within the benthic community occurred in very short time scales (within days).

Respiration was measured with a modified Cartesian diver technique, in which the nematodes were kept in agar inside the diver 'head'. Study of the effect of Aliette on the activity of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) chloroplasts Braz. J. Plant Physiol.

Intensification of production in modern agriculture is frequently obtained thanks to the increase of pesticide applications and chemical fertilizers. However, the use of these products sometimes causes a reduction of crop productivity. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the fungicide Aliette on in vitro activity of chloroplasts of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.). Transmembrane potential formation, PSII oxygen evolution and PSII photochemistry were analyzed. Our results showed that the recommended concentration (2.5 g L-1) of Aliette did not impair the photosynthetic apparatus. However, at higher concentrations (> 7.5 g L-1), reductions in thylakoid membrane potential and oxygen evolution were recorded, but with no evidence of photoinhibition.
